Utrecht in the Rain: Best Indoor Activities & Rainy Day Tips

Let's be honest: the Netherlands and rain go hand in hand. But here's a secret — Utrecht in the rain has its own kind of magic. Misty canals, cosy café culture, and world-class museums make a rainy day here anything but boring. Here's how to make the most of it.
1. Our free walking tour runs rain or shine
Yes, really! Our free walking tour goes ahead whatever the weather. The Dutch have a saying: "Er is geen slecht weer, alleen verkeerde kleding" (there's no bad weather, only wrong clothing). Grab a rain jacket and join us — the city looks beautiful in the rain, the streets are quieter, and your guide has plenty of sheltered stops along the route.
2. Centraal Museum
Utrecht's main museum is the perfect rainy-day escape. Its collection spans centuries of art, fashion and city history — including works by Utrecht Caravaggists and a room dedicated to Dick Bruna (creator of Miffy). Allow 2–3 hours.
3. Museum Speelklok
This unique museum houses a collection of self-playing musical instruments: from tiny music boxes to enormous fairground organs. The guided demonstrations are genuinely delightful and unlike anything you'll find elsewhere. Kids and adults love it equally.
4. DOMunder
Go underground beneath Domplein to explore 2,000 years of history — from Roman fortifications to medieval remains. This interactive experience uses torches and multimedia to bring the archaeology to life. It's entirely indoors and one of Utrecht's most unique attractions.
5. Rietveld Schröder House
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a masterpiece of De Stijl architecture, designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1924. Guided tours take you through the revolutionary interior with its movable walls and bold primary colours. Book in advance as spots are limited.
6. Warm up in a wharf cellar café
Utrecht's unique wharf cellars along the Oudegracht are at their cosiest in the rain. Duck into a canal-level café, order a koffie verkeerd (Dutch latte) and watch the raindrops hit the water. Some favourites: Oudaen (with its own brewery), Café Oude Pothuys, and Winkel van Sinkel.
7. Railway Museum (Spoorwegmuseum)
Located in the beautiful former Maliebaan station, this museum tells the story of Dutch railways with real historic trains, interactive exhibits and immersive experiences. It's brilliant for families and easily fills a half day.
8. Browse the independent shops on Twijnstraat
Twijnstraat aan de Werf and the surrounding streets are home to independent boutiques, vintage shops and galleries. Window-shopping and ducking in and out of stores is a perfect rainy-day activity — and much more interesting than a shopping mall.
9. Catch a film at 't Hoogt or Slachtstraat Filmhuis
Utrecht has a thriving arthouse cinema scene. Both venues show international and Dutch independent films, often in English with subtitles. Check their schedules online and enjoy an afternoon in a cosy cinema.
10. Visit the University Library
The Utrecht University Library on Drift is a stunning building open to visitors. The reading rooms are beautiful, and it's a peaceful place to spend a rainy hour with a book or simply admire the architecture.
11. Beer tasting at a local brewery
Utrecht has several craft breweries worth visiting. Oudaen (in a medieval castle on the Oudegracht) brews its own beer and offers tastings. De Leckere, just outside the centre, is another excellent option for a guided tasting session.
12. Try Dutch pancakes
Nothing warms you up like a stack of pannenkoeken. Dutch pancakes are thinner than American ones but bigger, and they come with sweet or savoury toppings. De Oude Muntkelder serves them in a historic canal-side cellar — the ultimate rainy-day comfort food.
Rainy day essentials
- Bring layers: Dutch rain is often light but persistent. A waterproof jacket beats an umbrella in the wind.
- Wear waterproof shoes: cobblestones + puddles = wet feet without them.
- Download the NS app: if you need to move between attractions, Dutch trains are reliable rain or shine.
- Embrace it: some of the best photos of Utrecht's canals are taken in the rain. Reflections on wet cobblestones are pure magic.
Don't let rain stop you
A rainy day in Utrecht is still a great day in Utrecht. Start with our free walking tour (rain or shine, every Saturday & Sunday at 10:30), then dive into museums, cafés and hidden gems. Book your spot and come prepared — you won't regret it!
