Top 10 Things to See in Utrecht

Utrecht is one of the Netherlands' most beautiful and historic cities, yet it remains refreshingly under-the-radar compared to Amsterdam. Whether you're joining our free walking tour or exploring on your own, these are the 10 sights you absolutely shouldn't miss.
1. The Dom Tower
At 112.5 metres, the Dom Tower is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. Built between 1321 and 1382, it dominates the Utrecht skyline. On our free walking tour, your guide will tell you the dramatic story of how the nave of the cathedral collapsed during a tornado in 1674: leaving the tower standing alone.
2. The Oudegracht & Wharf Cellars
Utrecht's Oudegracht (Old Canal) is unique in the world thanks to its two-level structure. The wharf cellars along the water were once used for storage and trade; today they house cosy restaurants, bars and shops. It's the city's most photographed spot for good reason.
3. Domplein
The square between the Dom Tower and the cathedral is where Utrecht's story began. Roman remains have been discovered here, and the square itself marks the empty space left by the collapsed nave. Your guide loves showing you the line of bricks that marks where the church once stood.
4. Pandhof Garden
Hidden behind the cathedral lies the Pandhof, a medieval cloister garden that feels like stepping into another century. With its Gothic arches and tranquil atmosphere, it's one of Utrecht's best-kept secrets: and a highlight on every walking tour.
5. Janskerkhof
This lively square is home to one of the Netherlands' oldest flower markets (Saturdays) and the impressive Janskerk. It's a perfect example of how Utrecht blends history with everyday life.
6. Trajectum Lumen
In the evening, Utrecht transforms with Trajectum Lumen: a permanent light art route along the canals and historic buildings. Artists have created stunning light installations that highlight the city's architectural beauty after dark.
7. The Drift
One of Utrecht's most atmospheric streets, the Drift is lined with grand university buildings. It's where you can feel the city's long academic tradition, dating back to 1636 when Utrecht University was founded.
8. Museum Quarter
Utrecht's museum quarter is home to the Centraal Museum, the Miffy Museum (nijntje museum) and Museum Speelklok. Even if you don't go inside, the quarter is beautiful to walk through.
9. Zocherpark
This English-style landscape park follows the line of the old city fortifications. A walk through Zocherpark takes you past the Sonnenborgh observatory and offers some of the most peaceful green space in the city centre.
10. Oudaen Castle
Right on the Oudegracht stands Oudaen, a medieval urban castle that now houses a restaurant and brewery. It's a striking reminder that Utrecht was once one of the most important cities in the Low Countries.
