Utrecht's Best Canal-Side Walks & Photo Spots

Utrecht's canals are among the most beautiful in Europe, yet they remain blissfully uncrowded compared to Amsterdam. Whether you're a photographer chasing the perfect shot or simply looking for a scenic walk, this guide reveals the best canal-side routes and photo spots in the city.
1. The Oudegracht: the classic walk
Start at the Bakkerbrug (near Trajectum Lumen) and walk south along the Oudegracht. This stretch gives you the iconic two-level canal view with wharf cellars, leaning trees and historic facades. For the best photos, shoot from the bridges looking along the canal: the lines of the buildings and water create beautiful perspective.
Best light: early morning or golden hour. The canal runs roughly north-south, so evening light paints the western facades beautifully.
2. Nieuwegracht: the hidden gem
Running parallel to the Oudegracht, the Nieuwegracht is quieter, narrower and arguably even more charming. The canal is lined with stately 17th-century houses and the reflections in the still water are stunning. Walk the full length from Janskerkhof to the Nicolaaskerk for a peaceful escape from the busier streets.
Photo tip: the small bridges over the Nieuwegracht frame perfect symmetrical reflection shots.
3. Twijnstraat aan de Werf
This narrow wharf-level path along the Oudegracht is one of Utrecht's most atmospheric spots. You walk right at the water's edge, past wharf cellar doors and under stone arches. It's like stepping back 400 years. In summer, cafés set up tables right along the path.
4. The Singel ring
The Catharijnesingel was restored to a canal in 2020 after being filled in for a highway in the 1970s. The full Singel ring now offers a beautiful circular walk around the old city centre. The stretch near Sonnenborgh observatory is particularly scenic, with overhanging trees and green park views.
5. Bemuurde Weerd
This area at the northern end of the Oudegracht, where the canal widens, has a completely different character. Old boats, converted houseboats and industrial heritage create a slightly rugged, photogenic atmosphere. Great for capturing a different side of Utrecht.
6. Vaartsche Rijn
The redeveloped canal area around Rotsoord and Vaartsche Rijn station blends industrial heritage with modern architecture. The contrast of old brick warehouses and contemporary buildings makes for interesting compositions. Walk south along the canal towards Houten for a peaceful waterside route.
7. Best times to photograph the canals
- Golden hour (1 hour before sunset): warm light on brick facades, beautiful reflections.
- Blue hour (just after sunset): the Trajectum Lumen lights switch on and the canals glow.
- Foggy mornings: rare but magical. The canals in mist look otherworldly.
- After rain: wet cobblestones reflect light beautifully, and the streets are quieter.
8. Essential photography tips
Bring a wide-angle lens for the narrow canal streets, and a polarising filter to cut glare on the water. A tripod is useful for blue-hour shots but not essential with modern phone cameras. Shoot from bridge level for sweeping views, or crouch down at wharf level for dramatic perspectives.
