The Fascinating History of the Dom Tower

Close-up view of the Gothic Dom Tower in Utrecht against a blue sky

The Dom Tower (Domtoren) is the undisputed icon of Utrecht and the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. Standing at 112.5 metres, it has dominated the Utrecht skyline since the 14th century. But its history is far more dramatic than most visitors realise.

    The construction (1321–1382)

The tower was built as part of the Cathedral of St. Martin, which was the largest church in the Netherlands at the time. Construction began in 1321 under the direction of Bishop Jan van Diest. The tower took over 60 years to complete: an enormous undertaking that required innovative engineering solutions.

The tower was built in three stages, each with its own distinct character. The bottom section is solid and fortress-like, the middle section more elegant with its Gothic windows, and the octagonal top section reaches dramatically towards the sky.

    The Great Tornado of 1674

The most dramatic chapter in the Dom Tower's history came on 1 August 1674, when a devastating tornado struck Utrecht. The nave of the cathedral: the section connecting the tower to the choir: collapsed entirely. Rather than rebuilding, the citizens of Utrecht simply cleared the rubble and created Domplein, the square that exists today.

This is why the Dom Tower stands alone, separated from the remaining choir of the cathedral. On our free walking tour, your guide shows you the exact line of bricks in the square that marks where the nave once stood.

    The bells

The Dom Tower houses one of the largest and oldest carillons in the Netherlands, with 50 bells. The heaviest bell, Salvator, weighs over 8,000 kilograms. Every quarter hour, the bells chime: a sound that has echoed across Utrecht for centuries and can be heard throughout the city centre.

    The tower today

After extensive restoration (2019–2024), the Dom Tower is once again open to visitors. The climb of 465 steps rewards you with panoramic views stretching as far as Amsterdam on a clear day. Even if you don't climb it, the tower is an essential part of any visit to Utrecht.
