Utrecht vs Amsterdam: Which Should You Visit?

Utrecht canal with colourful buildings and bicycles reflecting in the water

Every year, millions of tourists flock to Amsterdam: but just 30 minutes south lies Utrecht, a city with equally stunning canals, richer history, and a fraction of the crowds. If you're planning a trip to the Netherlands, here's why you should seriously consider Utrecht.

    Canals: Utrecht wins

Yes, you read that right. While Amsterdam's canals are world-famous, Utrecht's Oudegracht has something no other city can match: two-level canals with wharf cellars. These medieval storage spaces, built directly at water level, are now home to charming restaurants and cafés. You can sit literally at the water's edge: something you can't do in Amsterdam.

    Crowds: Utrecht wins, hands down

Amsterdam receives over 20 million tourists per year. Utrecht? A fraction of that. This means you can actually enjoy the sights without battling through tour groups. Streets feel authentic, locals are genuinely welcoming, and you won't feel like you're in a theme park.

    History: Utrecht has the edge

Utrecht was founded by the Romans in 47 AD: centuries before Amsterdam existed. The city was the religious centre of the Netherlands for over a thousand years. The Dom Tower, the Union of Utrecht (which helped create the Dutch Republic), and the city's episcopal heritage give it a depth of history that Amsterdam simply can't match.

    Cost: Utrecht is cheaper

Hotels, restaurants and attractions are noticeably cheaper in Utrecht. A meal that costs €25 in Amsterdam might be €18 in Utrecht: with equal or better quality. And of course, our walking tour is 100% free!

Culture and nightlife: it's a draw

Amsterdam has more big-name museums, but Utrecht holds its own with the Centraal Museum, Rietveld Schröder House (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and a thriving live music scene centred around TivoliVredenburg. Utrecht's café culture is arguably cosier and more authentic.

    Getting to Utrecht

Utrecht Central Station is the largest railway hub in the Netherlands. It's just 27 minutes from Amsterdam, 37 minutes from The Hague, and 40 minutes from Rotterdam. Many visitors use Utrecht as a base to explore the entire country.

    The verdict

If you want the "real" Netherlands: beautiful canals, rich history, friendly locals and great food without the tourist markup: Utrecht is your city. And the best way to discover it is on our free walking tour in Utrecht. Book your spot: meet us at the Dom Tower every Saturday & Sunday at 10:30.
