How to Get to Utrecht: Travel Guide from Amsterdam, Schiphol & Beyond

One of the best things about Utrecht is how easy it is to reach. As the central hub of the Dutch railway network, Utrecht Centraal is the country's busiest station — and that means excellent connections from everywhere. Here's your complete guide to getting here.
From Amsterdam (27 minutes)
Direct intercity trains run between Amsterdam Centraal and Utrecht Centraal every 10 minutes throughout the day. The journey takes just 27 minutes, costs around €9 one way, and you don't need to reserve a seat. Simply tap in with an OV-chipkaart or buy a ticket at the station or via the NS app.
Tip: If you're on a day trip, consider an NS Day Return ticket — it's only slightly more expensive than a single and covers both ways.
From Schiphol Airport (30–40 minutes)
Schiphol has its own train station directly beneath the terminal. Direct intercity trains to Utrecht Centraal depart every 15–30 minutes and the journey takes about 35 minutes. Some services require a transfer at Amsterdam Zuid, but it's straightforward. Tickets cost around €10.
Tip: Follow signs to "Trains" in the arrivals hall. You'll be on a platform within 5 minutes. Buy your ticket from the yellow NS machines or the NS app.
From Rotterdam (40 minutes)
Intercity trains from Rotterdam Centraal to Utrecht Centraal run every 10 minutes and take about 40 minutes. The route passes through Gouda — itself worth a stop if you have time.
From The Hague (37 minutes)
Direct trains from Den Haag Centraal reach Utrecht in approximately 37 minutes, departing several times per hour.
From Eindhoven (45 minutes)
Coming from the south? Intercity trains from Eindhoven take about 45 minutes and run frequently throughout the day.
From Brussels or Antwerp
The Thalys/Eurostar high-speed train from Brussels Midi reaches Utrecht in about 2 hours. You can also take a regular IC train from Antwerp to Rotterdam and transfer to Utrecht. Book high-speed tickets in advance for the best fares.
From Germany
ICE trains from Frankfurt, Cologne and Düsseldorf run directly to Utrecht Centraal. The journey from Cologne takes about 2.5 hours. Deutsche Bahn and NS sell tickets for these routes.
By car
Utrecht sits at the junction of the A2, A12, A27 and A28 motorways — but be warned: parking in the city centre is expensive (€4–5/hour). We recommend using a Park & Ride (P+R) facility on the edge of the city and taking a bus in. P+R Westraven and P+R De Uithof are popular choices at just a few euros per day.
Getting around Utrecht
Once you arrive at Utrecht Centraal, the old city centre is a 10-minute walk. Utrecht is compact and best explored on foot — which is exactly what our free walking tour is designed for. The station is also a major bus hub if you need to reach areas further out.
Arrive & explore
Now you know how to get here, the next step is easy: book your free walking tour and meet us at the Dom Tower every Saturday & Sunday at 10:30. We'll show you why this city is worth the trip!
