A Self-Guided Wall Painting Tour Through Utrecht

Utrecht isn't just about medieval history and canals: it's also home to a thriving street art scene. Over the past decade, dozens of stunning wall paintings and murals have popped up across the city, transforming blank facades into massive works of art. Here's your guide to the best ones.
1. The Jan Is De Man mural (Croeselaan)
One of Utrecht's most iconic murals, this enormous portrait by street artist Jan Is De Man covers the entire side of a residential building near Utrecht Centraal station. The photorealistic style is jaw-dropping and a perfect first stop on your street art walk.
2. KBTR's Miffy meets Street Art (Oudegracht)
Utrecht-born artist KBTR (spreek uit: Kabouter) is famous for blending the city's beloved Miffy character with urban street art styles. His work pops up in unexpected places along the Oudegracht: keep your eyes peeled for playful Miffy-inspired paste-ups and stencils.
3. The Giant Kingfisher (Gildstraat)
This breathtaking mural of a kingfisher: Utrecht's unofficial spirit animal: spans an entire building wall. Created during the annual street art festival, it's one of the most photographed murals in the city.
4. Lombok neighbourhood murals
The multicultural Lombok area, just west of the station, is Utrecht's street art hotspot. Wander through Kanaalstraat and the surrounding streets to discover murals celebrating cultural diversity, social themes and pure artistic expression. New works appear regularly.
5. Rotsoord creative district
This former industrial area along the Vaartsche Rijn canal has been transformed into a creative hub. The old factory walls serve as canvases for large-scale murals, and the area hosts regular street art events. Don't miss the works along Rotsoord and Koningsweg.
6. The Dick Bruna tunnel (Catharijnesingel)
While technically not a wall painting, this pedestrian tunnel decorated with Dick Bruna's iconic illustrations is a must-see. It connects the city centre with the museum quarter and is a colourful tribute to Utrecht's most famous artist.
7. Wittevrouwen hidden gems
The charming Wittevrouwen neighbourhood east of the city centre hides several smaller but beautiful murals on garage doors, garden walls and building sides. Walking through Biltstraat and the surrounding streets rewards the attentive explorer with unexpected art finds.
8. The Voorstraat collective walls
Utrecht's longest street, Voorstraat, features several collaborative murals created during community art projects. These works reflect the diverse character of the neighbourhood and change over time as new artists add their contributions.
9. Zuilen street art route
The northern neighbourhood of Zuilen has embraced street art as urban renewal. A dedicated route takes you past over a dozen murals that brighten up this working-class area. Pick up a map at the local community centre or simply follow the colours.
10. Griftpark surroundings
The streets around Griftpark: particularly along Waterstraat and Breedstraat: feature a collection of smaller, often more experimental street art pieces. This area attracts emerging artists and the work changes frequently, so every visit reveals something new.
